2010 Aspergers Day Camp

Asperger’s Day Camp is a unique summer program designed specifically for elementary, middle and high school students with Asperger’s Disorder and other serious socialization issues.

  • The program was designed by parents, care-givers and clinical professionals
  • The goal is to develop and maintain continuity in students’ developmental and behavioral skills throughout the summer
  • The program will be led by licensed and trained therapists, certified special education teachers and certified activities therapists in a safe, supportive environment.

The pattern-based curriculum includes:

  • Social skills development
  • Sensory motor integration skills training
  • Educational/learning skills
  • Study skills/adaptive classroom behavior
  • Activity/recreational therapy

Students may attend one week or all seven weeks. Lunch will be provided

Intensive Outpatient Program

Lakeside is pleased to announce Dr. John J. Harris, M.D., as the new Medical Director for our Intensive Outpatient Program for adults with mental health and dual diagnosis issues. Dr. Harris will also be available to see traditional outpatient clients. Dr. Harris specializes in the treatment of the adult addiction and dual diagnosis patient.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment Goals and Philosophy:

• To provide adults with a treatment option for mental health and dual diagnosis disorders in a confidential recovery environment.
• To use cognitive behavioral techniques in conjunction with a 12-step recovery model developed to address the psychological, social, and spiritual life of each individual and their family seeking help.
• To help return individuals to their family, job, and community equipped with the tools to sustain and maintain a lasting recovery program designed to bring joy back into their life.
• To help our client learn and grow from those in similar situations by ad- dressing feelings of shame, guilt, grief, depression, anger and fear affecting recovery not only from the program staff, but also from others through the group process.
• To identify relapse triggers and/or individual stressors that can hinder continued progress toward a happy, healthy lifestyle and to help our clients establish successful recovery plans and a successful support network.
• To enhance the coping skills of our clients for an improved quality of life through communication, problem solving, relaxation, meditation techniques, and assertiveness training.
• To encourage family members to participate in multi-family groups to sup- port their loved ones and to help begin repairing the damage caused by ad- diction and/or mental illnesses and to educate the individual and their family about the nature of mental health and addiction.

Bipolar Spectrum Program

Lakeside is pleased to announce the opening of the Bipolar Spectrum Program. The new inpatient program for adults provides a specialized approach for coping with and managing Bipolar Disorder. Radwan Haykal, MD serves as Medical Director for the program and is assisted by Doug Ginn, LCSW, Lakeside’s Chief Clinical Officer.

Therapeutic modalities include:

• Specialized process groups focusing on bipolar issues
• Educational groups focused on developing more adaptive coping skills
• Leisure education to improve skills in exercise and social interaction
• Monitoring of mood and sleep patterns to assist patients in identifying mood cycles
• Multi-family group to assist in family education regarding the illness
• Participation in Depression Bipolar Support Alliance group
• Nutritional education to promote healthy living skills

Dr. Radwan Haykal graduated from the American University of Beirut Medical School in 1975. He completed his psychiatric residency in 1978 from the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in Memphis, Tennessee. He has been Board Certified since 1980 and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been in private practice in Memphis and affiliated with Lakeside for the past 25 years. Dr. Haykal is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. He has served as the Medical Advisor to the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance of Memphis since its inception in 1986. He has published several articles on mood disorders with focus on dysthymia and bipolar disorder and has been a speaker in national and international psychiatric forums. He is past president of the Tennessee Psychiatric Association.
